Mid-fifties production design of which there were 21 examples produced from Turinese coach builder Serafino Allemano, 17 by coachbuilder Frua, and 21 examples by Zagato, including 1 Spyder. Vertical in-line 6 cylinder dual overhead cam engine, producing 150bhp @6,000rpm.

VAHF example shown above: 1956 A6G- 2000 GT Allemano, chassis (#2115),  6-cylinder 2000cc engine, built in May, 1956 as an Allemano bodied coupé. Original exterior color was grey with an interior of red leather. Sold first to the ex-Formula One driver Baron de Graffenried.

Debuting at the Salon of Turin Motor Show in 1959, the Vignale Spyder was an instant classic which still commands respect and a premium price today. All Vignale Spyders had serial numbers ending in odd numbers distinguishing them from the serial numbers of the coupés.

  One of the most unique road cars Maserati (or anyone else) ever built, the 5000GT incorporated all the qualities which made the marque exclusive and distinctive. Debuting at the Turin Show in 1959, the first 5000 was shown with a barely modified road version of the monstrous 450S racing engine which in race version was perhaps the fastest Sports Racer of its day. Needless to say, with this powerhouse strapped to its chassis the 5000 was in its day, the fastest street legal GT car made.

It was also the most expensive with an original offering price of 7.5 million lira. For the few lucky individuals who knew about and could afford the 5000GT, there were few examples to be had. Adding to the exclusivity of the series, only 32 total examples were built, with coachwork stylings spread across 9 of the most famous Italian car designers of the era.

These numbered as follows: 21 (the "series" production) by Allemano, 3 Touring bodied, 1 designed by Michelotti and built by Ghia,1 designed by Michelotti and built by Vignale, 2 by Frua, 1 from Pinin Farina, 2 Monterosa, and 1 Bertone. 5000GT's were produced from 1959-1964.

VAHF example shown above: 1961 5000GT (#101*028*), Allemano bodied "Indianapolis": a special, one-off, version of the "series" car. Built in October of 1961, the original color was silver grey with a red leather interior. The grillwork was unique to this Allemano version along with the side script pictured above. The first owner was Mr. William H. Brown of Pittsburgh, PA.

Maserati Ghibli Open Cup Race Cars: In the early 90's Maserati got the idea to build a special racing version of their second series Ghibli road car 
specifically for owners to compete in what would be known as the Ghibli Open Cup Championship. Under the organization and direction of the 
Modenese firm, Historica Selecta (headed by Dott. Adolfo Orsi), this one-off race was organized and run during 1995 with great success. After the '95 
season the cars were offered a factory upgrade in the form of the below listed "Evolution" kit. The 1996 cars were considerably stronger and, in spite of 
the cancellation of the '96 series after only 2 races due to economic restrictions,  many private owners still race the cars to success on European 
circuits in the various GT championships. Specifications follow photos.

VAHF example (on loan): 

'96 Ghibli Open Cup #361*220* shown above. Chassis #361*220* is a (white) '95 car upgraded via the "evolution kit" to '96 specs. This was the #11 car during the 1995 Ghibli Open Cup Championship which in the hands of Federico D'Amore won first place in the professional class and took second place overall in the series.

1996 MASERATI GHIBLI OPEN CUP "EVOLUTION" KIT
As stated above, an "Evolution" upgrade kit was offered to owners of the 1995 Ghibli Open Cup Cars to convert the cars to the '96 race specs. The following list shows only the differences between the 1996 and 1995 Ghibli Open Cup models. All the listed particulars are part of the update kit which was sold by Maserati:
  • New racing mufflers
  • Shorter final drive ratio (3.90:1)
  • Completely re-designed competition braking system with four-pot calipers and floating, ventilated and drilled discs (front 355 mm, rear 313 mm)
  • Completely redesigned front suspension without rubber bushings, mounted on uniball
  • Struts with larger bearings and adjustable McPherson strut upper connection
  • Modified steering geometry and servo assistance
