The New Maseratis

The new Quattroporte has been designed by noted Ferrari designer Pininfarina who last designed a car for Maserati in the 60s—on a 5000GT platform. Here you see early design sketches of the car. As I predicted in iL TRIDENTE, the QP is the car to watch as the real forecast of what Maserati will produce in the future as it's represents the first new design from them under the new administration. Note the significant reference in the front grillwork to historic Maserati's from the 40s & 50s, including Pininfarina's own A6-1500 design.

The car appears to be ready to leap off the page as though being aerodynamically shaped for its true destiny—reclaiming the title of fastest sedan produced by any manufacturer, a title Maserati held on several previous occasions.

The rear taillights, whose shape seems similar to those on the current Coupe and Spyder, worked much better in this design and be molded right into the rear lines. And I love the understated "Maserati" script on the trunk access handle although it apparently has not made it into the final design. A good design makes it's own destiny and therefore not need to have overt announcements written on it. We will continue to offer you the earliest news we can as it becomes available. —SP
