DETROIT, MI The Detroit
Auto Show is the setting for Maserati's U.S. debut today as Luca de Montezemolo
presented the new Coupe and Spyder before a sea of auto industry journalists.
He spoke of the importance of maintaining the identity of Maseratis in
lieu of Ferrari ownership and building a car of the highest build quality
and technological levels. He reports that Maserati intends to ship 1400 cars
to the U.S. in 2002 against what he considers her main competitors - Porsche
& Jaguar. The new Coupe and Spyder, now both contain an all-new 4.2
liter V8 and all-new braking system. They will be marketed in the U.S. in
the $77-$87,000 price range. Financial services will be provided via Chase
Manhattan Bank and the cars will have a 4-year/50,000 mile warranty. We
will soon present the first comprehensive information on Maserati's new Coupe,
which, in spite of numerous references to it as the "4200 GT" elsewhere,
is simply called "Coupe GT" or "Coupe Cambiocorsa" depending on your choice
of transmission. Numerous small but important changes have been made to
it from the 3200GT which preceded it, like lengthening the chassis (to increase
interior space) by approximately 20 centimeters, carrying over all the latest
technology from the Spyder, deepening the bucket seats, and of course adding
the new taillights and new hood design, sans hood scoops. Little details
like this are why our iL TRIDENTE magazine and TMC have become known as the
reliable source of accurate information on the marque.
